Why stay here instead of Page: the Lees Ferry corridor is roughly an hour from town, and many of its best moments happen early — fishing at first light, the launch-ramp bustle of river trips, morning condors riding updrafts at the bridge, the Vermilion Cliffs catching the sunrise. Sleeping at Marble Canyon puts all of that on your doorstep and shortens the drive to House Rock Valley Road for Wire Pass, Buckskin Gulch and the Wave. History runs deep for a roadside stop. A lodge and trading post have operated here since 1929, when the lodge was already open for the dedication of Navajo Bridge that June. Trader Lorenzo Hubbell financed it and Buck Lowrey ran it, and the original lodge building still stands, restored, on the property. For decades it has been the last bed for Grand Canyon river trips leaving from Lees Ferry, and the cliffs behind it have appeared on screen, including scenes from the film Bumblebee.

Room craft: lodge rooms come with two twins, two queens or one king, so choose by bed configuration; one accessible room has grab bars. Families and groups should look at the Ranch Cottages, which have two bedrooms, one and a half baths, a full kitchen, a living room and a private patio with its own fire pit. Plan dinner at the Lonely JackRabbit, then gather at the fire pits under a very dark sky. Fuel up before heading into the backcountry; the station here is the last for a long way in several directions.

Practicals: on US 89A in Marble Canyon, Arizona, about forty-five minutes from Page and just west of Navajo Bridge. Check-in mid-afternoon, check-out late morning. Restaurant, coffee bar, trading post with gear and Indigenous art, gas station and airstrip on site. Compared with a Page chain hotel, you give up choice of restaurants and some polish, and gain dawn on the Vermilion Cliffs and an hour less driving for every Lees Ferry or House Rock Valley outing. Fit: anglers, river runners, photographers and road-trippers exploring the Vermilion Cliffs.
