The building's story predates the movies. The main house was a family home in pioneer Kanab, and in 1928 three brothers from Salt Lake City, Chauncey, Gronway and Whit Parry, bought it. In 1930 and 1931 they added buildings and opened it as a roadside motel and restaurant on Highway 89. Film crews had been coming to Kanab since the 1920s, and the lodge went on to host the people behind more than a hundred productions. The lodge names John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Maureen O'Hara, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Ronald Reagan and Clint Eastwood among its guests, and The Outlaw Josey Wales among the films. Most rooms carry an actor's name, and the property has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003. A 1956 award ranked it among the ten best roadside inns in the country. Kanab as a base: from here, Zion's East Entrance and Page are each about an hour or so away, Bryce and the Grand Canyon's North Rim road are within a long morning's drive, and the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and Pipe Spring are right on the doorstep. Staying in Kanab between Zion and Page lets a Grand Circle loop breathe.
Room craft: the historic main building carries the Hollywood atmosphere, but rooms vary a lot across the property's different buildings, so read room descriptions carefully. Standard rooms range from a single queen with walk-in shower to double kings in the two-story building. The two-room 2 King Cottage near the pool has a full kitchen and suits families, and the two-room suites work for groups. Kitchenette rooms suit longer stays, and the hotel keeps pet-free rooms for guests with allergies. Look for direct-booking promotions on the official site, such as multi-night discounts, and ask the front desk about the movie photographs displayed around the property. Expect motor-lodge comfort, not modern luxury: the reason to choose Parry over a newer chain is the history.
Practicals: 89 East Center Street, on Kanab's main street, walking distance to restaurants and shops; free parking; heated pool; free hot breakfast buffet; guest laundry; pet-friendly rooms available. Best Western Red Hills, the more conventional choice, is a couple of blocks west. Remember that Kanab, in Utah, observes daylight saving time while Page does not. Fit: road-trippers, families and film buffs who want character and value at the heart of the Grand Circle.
