The geography explains the plan. Page sits about a hundred road miles from the canyon's eastern rim, and the approach through Cameron is the scenic one: the Echo Cliffs glowing on the left, Navajo roadside jewelry stands, the historic Cameron Trading Post (worth a stop for breakfast or a Navajo taco), and then the climb along the Little Colorado River Gorge, whose own overlooks give a narrow, vertiginous preview of what is coming. The East Entrance station leads straight to Desert View, the logical first stop: Colter's stone Watchtower, built to echo ancestral Puebloan towers, has ground-floor views and murals, and its upper floors open when staffing allows, on a free first-come ticket. Note that the trading post, market and deli at Desert View close for the winter season and there is no lodging there, though the pay-at-the-pump fuel stays open.
The craft is in pacing the drive. Desert View Drive is open to all vehicles year-round, weather permitting, and its viewpoints reward short stops rather than marathon ones: Lipan Point for the widest view of the river, Grandview for the deep forested side canyons, Moran Point for the late-afternoon color. Grand Canyon Village then offers the paved Rim Trail — walk a mile or two between Mather Point and Verkamp's to feel the scale properly — plus the free park shuttles that loop the village and Hermit Road in season. Sunset from Hopi Point or Mohave Point is the payoff if you can stand a late drive home; otherwise, plan the westbound overlooks for morning light and start back mid-afternoon. Summer brings monsoon storms and heavy village traffic; winter brings snow at seven thousand feet and the quietest rim of the year.
Practicals: allow about two hours from Page to Desert View and another forty-five minutes to the village; fill up in Page or Cameron. The entrance fee is per vehicle, valid for several days, and covered by the interagency annual pass. Rim edges are mostly unrailed — keep kids close and stay behind barriers where they exist. Pair it with a slower morning in Page the next day; if you want to turn the trip into an overnight, El Tovar and the Cameron Trading Post (both in this guide) bracket the route. The North Rim, closer as the crow flies, is not the alternative it looks like: the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed its lodge, and in 2026 it runs as a limited day-use area with most rim trails closed.
What to Expect
Format
A self-drive full day: US 89 to Cameron, State Route 64 to the East Entrance, the Desert View Watchtower, twenty-three miles of rim overlooks, then Grand Canyon Village and the Rim Trail. Per-vehicle park entry; bookable flights and tours via the link.
Best Time
Start at dawn for cool air and empty pullouts; spring and fall are the kindest seasons. Morning light suits the eastern overlooks, late afternoon the village viewpoints.
Duration
A full day — about two hours each way plus five or six at the rim.
Tips
Fuel up in Page or Cameron. The Watchtower upper floors run on free same-day tickets when open. Desert View services close in winter, but the pumps stay on. Rims are largely unrailed — supervise children closely.

Is the South Rim really doable as a day trip from Page?
Yes — it is roughly two hours to the East Entrance at Desert View and about forty-five more minutes to Grand Canyon Village. It makes a long day, so start early and plan the return before you get tired.
Which entrance should we use from Page?
The East Entrance on State Route 64 via Cameron. It is open around the clock, usually far quieter than the South Entrance at Tusayan, and it puts the Desert View Watchtower first.
What does it cost to get in?
A per-vehicle park entrance fee valid for several days; the America the Beautiful annual pass covers it. Guided tours and rim flights are extra and bookable ahead.
Is the North Rim a better option?
Not at the moment. The 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, and the North Rim reopened in 2026 only for limited day use, with most rim trails closed and no lodging inside the park.
Can we climb the Desert View Watchtower?
The ground floor is open daily; the upper floors open when staffing allows, on free first-come tickets with a small group cap and a short visit window.
