Zion's power is verticality. The Virgin River has cut a canyon so narrow and deep that the walls — Navajo sandstone, the same rock as Page's slot canyons, here two thousand feet tall — dominate every view from the floor. That is why the park works so well as a contrast to Page: after the intimate, light-filtered slots of Antelope Canyon, Zion delivers the same stone at an architectural scale. The east-side drive is a show of its own: pull over at the Canyon Overlook trailhead just east of the long tunnel for a short, ledge-lined walk to a view straight down Pine Creek into the main canyon, one of the best payoffs per mile in the park.

Once in the canyon, let the shuttle do the work. Riverside Walk at the Temple of Sinawava is flat and paved, ending where the Narrows begin; the Lower Emerald Pool trail suits families; Pa'rus Trail follows the river near the visitor center. Angels Landing is the famous one, a chain-assisted fin of rock reserved for permit holders, and the bottom-up Narrows hike means wading the river in cold water — rental outfitters in Springdale supply canyoneering shoes and drysuits in the cooler months. Some trails remain closed after past rockfall, including Hidden Canyon and the Observation Point route from the canyon floor, so check before you set your heart on one.

Practicals: from Page, go west on US 89 through Big Water and Kanab, then north to Mount Carmel Junction and in on State Route 9. Arizona and Utah sit on different clocks for much of the year (Utah observes daylight saving time), so watch shuttle and permit times. Parking near the South Entrance and in Springdale fills early in season; arriving from the east first thing in the morning is a real advantage. Pair Zion with Bryce on an overnight loop through Kanab, or with the Coral Pink Sand Dunes on the way home.

What to Expect

Format

A two-hour drive west to the East Entrance, the scenic tunnel road down into Zion Canyon, then the free seasonal shuttle to trailheads along the Virgin River. Per-vehicle entry; Angels Landing by lottery permit only.

Best Time

Spring and fall for comfortable hiking and lower river levels; arrive early in the day for parking. Summer is hot and crowded; winter is quiet but some trails ice up.

Duration

A full day from Page; an overnight in Springdale or Kanab makes it relaxed.

Tips

Check road status first — the east-side highway had a rockfall closure in fall 2026. Utah is on daylight saving time when Arizona is not. Oversize RVs face tunnel limits. Stop at Canyon Overlook on the way in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Page to Zion?

About two hours to the East Entrance via Kanab and Mount Carmel Junction, then a scenic half hour through the tunnel down into Zion Canyon.

Can we drive our own car up Zion Canyon?

Not while the shuttle runs, which is from early spring to late fall — private vehicles are then kept off the Scenic Drive and the free shuttle takes you to every trailhead.

Do we need a permit for Angels Landing?

Yes. Angels Landing is permit-only through the park's lottery system; the rest of the West Rim Trail up to Scout Lookout does not require one.

Is the east entrance road open?

A large rockfall closed part of the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway on September 30, 2026; the park reopened the full road on October 9 with temporary gravel sections. Check current conditions before you go.

What time zone is Zion in?

Utah observes daylight saving time and Arizona does not, so for much of the year Zion runs an hour ahead of Page. Set shuttle and permit times by Utah clocks.
